A selection of Bach keyboard suites and sonatas for violin & keyboard
What drew me to this program was how improvisatory these pieces feel, and how that realm of fantasy goes much further beyond one would imagine.
What binds these pieces to me is also the notion of life & death, and fantasy & reality, with the most fascinating moments right in between the two worlds. In Chopin’s last major piano composition, the stoic polonaise dance interrupts the fantasy. Beethoven’s sonata was inspired by Shakespeare’s “Tempest”, and Liszt’s sonata was inspired by Goethe’s “Faust”. These monumental literature pieces express in music the full capacity of human characters and emotions, enhanced by magic and divine powers, and travel through the deepest abyss onto the utmost transcendental.
